European Buddhist Monastery - Lumbini, Nepal

Mother Temple of the Graduated Path to Enlightenment

built by Rabten Foundation Switzerland

In many Western countries there is growing appreciation for the teachings of Lord Buddha. The profound philosophy corresponds well to modern scientific views and is therefore particularly appealing to many intellectuals, and the impartial universal compassion taught by Lord Buddha is admired by all.

Caused by this esteem for the teachings there is also growing respect for the unsurpassed teacher, Lord Buddha, and therefore increasing interest in the holy places of His life. Among these, Lumbini is even greater than the eight world wonders, being the very origin of the great wave of blessings arising from the enlightened teacher's activities.

The essence of all of the Buddha's words is condensed in the teachings on the Graduated Path to Enlightenment. In reference to these teachings, emanated by Lord Buddha and transmitted through the great masters Atisha, Je Tsongkhapa, and Geshe Rabten Rinpoche, this temple has obtained its name.

The purpose of the monastery is to promote the pure view, the conduct, and the meditation as taught by Lord Buddha. The monastery has neither political nor commercial or sectarian aims of any kind.

Representations:

The altar depicts the scene of Lord Buddha's birth with the great gods Brahma and Indra, the King of Nagas, and Lumbini's Forest Goddess joyfully watching.

Visiting:

The temple can be visited from 8:00 to 12:00h and 13:00 to 17:00h every day except Tuesday. For pilgrims and meditators it is also possible to spend some time in the monastery. The whole setting of the monastery is simple but very clean. The monastery has been built to offer natural coolness during the hot seasons, including ventilators, but there is no air condition. The most agreeable months to visit are September till March, with a few cool and misty weeks possible around the turn of the year.
